Reflections from the Celtic Carmelite Wisdom Path of Life

Several years ago, the Holy Spirit led me to look at an old book on Church Growth and Development. I had not looked at this book in many years. I opened the book and read these words, which were at the top of the page and in bold print:
“God wants us to be faithful, not effective.”

These words riveted my attention and have led me on a journey which has attempted to contrast two concepts: what I call “skill acquisition,” and guidance from the Holy Spirit.

For me, skill acquisition places the emphasis on me and my skills. This typically involves transferring principles from the business world into my personal life. Skill acquisition addresses questions such as, “How can I become more effective?; How can I be more successful?”

Skill acquisition focuses more on external issues.

In contrast, guidance from the Holy Spirit places emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. It is focused upon what the Holy Spirit is doing in my life. It is a much more internal experience.

Our interior life is what seems to be of most importance to Jesus.

Let us invite the Holy Spirit to take up permanent residence within us, and to guide us in each step of our lives.

Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend upon your own understanding. Seek His will in all that you do, and He will show you which path to take.” (NLT)
